The Quiz

by sam

Okay, so within the past month in a half, I have noticed a mass exodus from Singlesville: 3 weddings and 2 engagements later... I mean, WHAT IS GOING ON??? I guess that maybe I'm not 18-years-old anymore (although most of the time I feel like I am), and I guess that's what people do... I guess (heh. heh.). In this day and age where the divorce rate is at almost 50%, when my friends were about to walk down the aisle, or announced their engagements, I whispered to them, "Are you SURE that this is what you want to do?"(- Seriously, I did that) and each of them answered "Yes". They all said their answers with extreme sincerity, while I had so many questions (and I wasn't the one who was taking the plunge!). It got me to thinking, WHAT IS IT IN A COUPLE THAT MAKES A RELATIONSHIP LAST?

I adore my parents- they are neat people. They have been married for 25 years and they are still together. I am sure that they have had their ups and downs, but (to my knowledge) they are happily married. So, I put together a little quiz (like those "get to know you better" ones your friends forward you) and decided to ask my parents the same questions, and compare their answers, and see what I could suss out. I called my parents who live in Vancouver and got to business (I also noted background conversations in brackets):

17) WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE DAUGHTER? SAM OR JO?

Both.

It's funny. It was really fun getting my parents to answer all of these questions... and getting to know things about them that I didn't know. After doing it, I realized that I didn't even know what I was looking for in their answers... similarities? Differences? Qualities of compatibility? Naive was what I was. Perhaps what I figured out with my parents wasn't the answers that they gave necessarily, but rather, what was going on while they answered. The thing that I noticed most was that the entire time I talked to them, they would talk to each other and both were always laughing.... Maybe that's the key...talking and laughter (and a propensity towards vanilla?).

(Pause)

Excuse me, I gotta go see some stand-up now... just to talk! heh. heh.
