Flying the unfriendly skies... Are you? Think you're strong? Think you're weak? Have you got a bone to pick? Is that your bone, or are you just happy to see me? Cute UCLA grad seeks low-flying below-the-radar handsome type to deconstruct.

Completed in the summer of 2000, Achievers is the first play from new playwright Michael Golamco. Since then, Achievers has been both publicly read and produced across the country, from New York City and Washington DC to the San Francisco Bay Area. In each location, Achievers has played to sold-out, standing-ovation audiences.

Then, last November, ProperGander ran Achievers for five weeks at the 100-seat Century City Playhouse, selling out over half of our 15 show and kicking massive bootay!

Now, as we prepare to bring the play back, let's take a jog down memory lane and examine the play's past...

August, 2000
NYC Funk

Achievers' first true public reading took place in Manhattan at the venerable Public Theater. Produced by New York's Second Generation Productions, the reading featured Deborah "Queen of Seoul" Craig, Joel "The Papa" de la Fuente, Ron "Watch the Camera" Domingo, Sue Jean "Water is Good" Kim, and Lloyd "It's So Good" Suh. The reading was directed by Alan Muraoka and produced by the unsinkable Laura Bach and the irreverent Welly Yang.

The play was publicly read on two nights, and on both nights the audience embraced the work and its characters with "I [heart] NY" warmth. The NYC reading lead to a galvanized final draft, and the play's first productions...

School Daze

Achievers then went on to productions at college campuses across the country; each production featured a local cast, director, and crew. Thus, the play found its target audience and a home at each school.

Dartmouth Blitz

The very first production of Achievers took place at Ivy League college Dartmouth, in Hanover, New Hampshire. There, the play has the distinction of being the first Asian American play ever performed in the school's history. Headed up by Andrew "Chuey" Chu, a crackerjack squad composed of Dartmouth students Morna Ha, Gerald Lam, Diana Lau, Richard Park, and Wen-Kai Ying rocked the house.

Cal-ifornication

Almost immediately after the Dartmouth production came the performance at U.C. Berkeley. Director Homer Rabara put together an enhanced performance with an extra layer of video and multimedia effects. The cast included Ryan Morales, Mina Kurata, Stephanie Don, Aaron Niles, and Tad Yagi, and was a visual riot.

As Seen On TV: Berkeley's Cast

The Cardinal Rule

The next Achievers production took place at Berkeley's rival Stanford University, home to the Asian American Theatre Project (originally founded by David Henry Hwang). Professor Daphne Lei directed a student cast comprised of Dan Lee, Miki Nguyen, Ricky Wang, Erik Wong, and Winnie Yuan. The show, produced by John Lim, packed audiences in on every night.

Finally...

Finally, Achievers played at Cal Poly Pomona, and is about to finish off its college series with a show back in the Bay Area at Contra Costa College. Finally, the play ended its cross-country tour with last August's public reading in Washington DC with Asian Stories in America, DC's hottest API theatre company.
